The evening ends dramatically, just before midnight, when a loud bang rings out round the courtyard. Like an Agatha Christie film, doors open and people appear on the balcony. But no Poirot. The cause of the alarm is my little laptop transformer / power source. Plugging it in for a second go, I press the switch and it seems to work OK this time. Then bang - with a loud report the transformer explodes, shoots across the room and lands in 3 pieces on the floor. Technology can be so exciting.
